Ekiti State University

Department of Geology

The Department of Geology presently comprises two options: Geology and Geophysics. The programme of the Department of Geology are designed for students to have in-depth knowledge of fundamental concepts in Earth and planetary science/developing the ability to collect, analyse and interpret geological/geophysical and environmental data.

The curriculum is based on the application of the knowledge of basic Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science to tap the hidden resources (crude oil, coal, economic mineral deposits, groundwater etc.) within the earth for the benefit of mankind. Graduates from the Department with BSc. degree in Geology or Applied Geophysics should not only have acquired the prerequisite geological and geophysical skills and knowledge in the broadest sense, but also be able to address real geological and/or environmental problems and work as professional Geologists in government parastatals, higher institutions of learning, research institutes, industries and consulting organizations in Nigeria and other countries and to be capable of self-employment after graduation.

There are 5 Professors, 3 Readers, 3 Senior lecturer, 2 Lecturer I, and a couple of other younger lecturers.

A couple of interesting laboratories and workstation domiciles in the Department. These includes multi-million Naira Work Station donated by ExxonMobil, general laboratory, engineering laboratory, petrographical laboratory and a standard geological workshops. These are manned by qualified technicians and technologists with post graduate degrees. We are proud to say we have 24 hour electricity in the Geology Department.

The Department offers BSc., PGD., M. Phil., M.Sc and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree programms. These are taught by a first-rate tutors and supported by a fine crop of Non-teaching staff. A new approach in building up our academic unit is nurturing relationships with our alumni, employers, friends in the community and other important external stakeholders.

The undergraduate programmes in the Department of Geology are designed to:

  1. Provide geological based education that is relevant to Nigerian situation in the area of Earth Sciences.

  1. Train the students to acquire considerable in-depth knowledge in various aspects of Geology with emphasis on Applied Geology subjects such as Geological Mapping, Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, Petroleum Geology, Exploration Geophysics, Geochemistry, Economic Geology, Micropaleontology and Palynology among others

We will continue to keep you informed about what’s going on in our Department, but we need your ideas and support. As the Ag. Head of Department, my doors are open and I am available to attend to you in case you need clarification on issues about the Department. My office is the ground floor in the New Faculty of Science Building complex just behind the foyer.

It is my pleasure to lead the Department at this time. There is a lot to do, i am poised and excited about what we have been doing and also what we have to offer; and the many opportunities that await us in training our students, and developing our Department and the University at large.
