Welcome to the Department of Microbiology
The Department is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Science and has a group of seasoned, disciplined and vibrant researchers with track records of teaching and research. The Department runs a 4-year degree programme that leads to the award of Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) in Microbiology. It also provides a high-level, quality learning experience for its Postgraduate students. The Department produced highly disciplined and employable graduates. The high relevance of the programme offers the prospective graduates employment opportunities in diverse area of live endeavours, from agriculture, industries (production, packaging, storage and distribution), research institutes, pharmaceutical and medicinal (biotechnology and drug production) establishment, food (quality control), and cosmetic production. Apart from having expertise in the Food and Industrial, Medical and Pathogenic, and Water and Environmental Microbiology, the staff members combined discipline and excellence with equity. The Department also offers exciting research expertise in fermentation biotechnology, environmental management, water sanitation and treatment, stored products, public health surveillance and forensic (Microbiology) studies.
